Check the closure before travelling
As checked on 29 October 2026, the Mauritius Museums Council’s visitor page still carries a temporary closure notice for the National History Museum from 15 December 2025. The dated communiqué says renovation work was expected to take around one year. That estimate is not a confirmed reopening date. Do not make a special journey expecting to enter the galleries without a newer official announcement.
Know which museum you are looking for
This is the National History Museum in Mahébourg, often called the Naval Museum, on Royal Road. It is different from the Natural History Museum in Port Louis. Those similar names can send visitors to the wrong city or the wrong opening-hours page. When asking a driver or searching a map, include both Mahébourg and National History Museum.
Understand why the building matters
The museum occupies Château Gheude, a late eighteenth-century residence. Its collections introduce Mauritius’s history through objects such as maps and material connected with shipwrecks and naval conflict. Think of it as context for the bay outside, rather than a beach attraction. The historic collection description explains its interest; it does not mean every item is currently on display or accessible during the works.
Make a town visit that works without admission
Keep the waterfront, town streets and a meal as the core of your Mahébourg outing. You can read about the maritime past before walking beside Grand Port Bay. If you pass the museum, respect any closed gates or works barriers. Keep outside closed grounds and works barriers, including when taking photographs.
Use an official update, not an old timetable
The Council’s contact and visiting page is the useful first check. It currently includes the closure alongside older routine hours, so read the notice before the timetable. The official telephone listed is +230 631 9329. Ask whether public visits have resumed, which areas are accessible and whether the usual opening arrangements apply to your intended day.
Fit it into a future visit
Once reopening is confirmed, allow room for the museum and a separate waterfront walk rather than racing through both between transfers. Ask about photography, bags and access needs when checking admission. Families can choose one historical theme to follow through the galleries, then look at the bay afterwards. This makes the visit more memorable than trying to absorb every label.
Plan your visit
Questions before you go
Is Mahébourg museum open now?
The official page checked on 29 October 2026 still displays the closure from 15 December 2025. Plan the town visit around the waterfront and streets until the Museums Council announces reopening.
Is this the Port Louis Natural History Museum?
No. Mahébourg’s National History Museum and Port Louis’s Natural History Museum are separate places.
Does the renovation estimate mean it reopens in December 2026?
No. Around one year was an estimate in the communiqué, not a reopening promise.
